Leading Through Constraint

How SDU's board leads from the field

In a district where need is high and resources are tight, SDU's board stays close to the communities it serves.

Since its founding in 2019, SDU has worked to improve the lives of persons with disabilities through advocacy, livelihoods, education, and health interventions. Under the leadership of Executive Director Betty Kyogabirwe and a hands-on Board, the organization has supported over 60 households and reached thousands through community sensitization.

What makes SDU's leadership distinct is its deep connection to the communities it serves. Board members, led by Chairperson Lazarus Owakubariho, are actively involved in field activities, participating in community meetings, monitoring interventions, and directly engaging with beneficiaries.

"We want to see the impact for ourselves," Owakubariho explains. "That is how we stay accountable and responsive."

Despite resource constraints, SDU continues to leverage partnerships with local government, schools, and health institutions — securing office space, bursaries for children with disabilities, and collaborative service delivery.

"At our core, we are driven by lived experience. We understand the challenges, and that is why we remain committed." — Lazarus Owakubariho, Board Chairperson
